Talar avascular necrosis

60 years old, non diabetic female patient with ankle pain of 3 months duration.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years old
  • Mild flattening of the talar dome with diffuse altered MR signal of the majority of the talus bone with relative sparing of the anterior most aspect of the talar head. It appears of low signal on T1, heterogeneous high signal on T2 & STIR weighted images.
  • A serpiginous line is seen in the talar dome immediately below the superior articular surface being of low signal on T1, T2 & STIR.
  • Fluid signal is seen at the subtalar joint and transverse tarsal joint spaces.
  • Subcutaneous edematous changes more pronounced along the medial aspect of the lower leg & ankle.
