Talc pleurodesis

Case contributed by Stefan Tigges
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Prior talc pleurodesis to treat recurrent pleural effusions.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
ct

Multiple dense pleural deposits are present throughout the right hemithorax.

Case Discussion

Except for the unusually thick pleural deposits in the upper right chest, this is a fairly typical appearance for a patient who has undergone talc pleurodesis to prevent reaccumulation of pleural fluid. The deposits tend to be less dense than calcifications due to asbestos exposure, prior infection, or trauma, and tend to involve fissures as well.
