Fall on the right side of the head
Patient Data
A vertical fissure fracture is noted involving the squamous part of the right temporal bone.
A parallel fracture is noted crossing the right petrous temporal bone (transverse petrous bone fracture) is seen, best seen on sagittal reformats.
Minimal increased space of right incudomalleolar joint, which is aligned at the plane of fracture seen on sagittal reformat, suggestive of minimal incudomalleolar joint separation.
Mild right middle ear and mastoid effusion, suggestive of hemotympanum.
Intact facial nerve canal.
Case Discussion
This case represents serious post-traumatic sequels in infants and children from falls on head. CT scan demonstrated a fracture of the squamous part of temporal bone and an undisplaced transverse fracture along the petrous temporal bone with hemotympanum and a suspected minimal incudomalleolar separation.
