Temporal lobe atrophy post herpes simplex encephalitis

PH of herpes encephalitis, now seizures. Poor short term memory.

Patient Data

Age: 30
Gender: Male

Gross atrophy of the right temporal lobe (grey and white matter) with ex-vacuo dilatation of the right temporal horn.  Surrounding T2 brightening indicative of gliosis.

Case Discussion

Herpes simplex encephalitis is a devastating infection and if not treated early can cause severe destruction of brain tissue leading to gross atrophy as evidenced by this case.
