Chronic right temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female

Post op alignment of the right TMJ replacement is anatomic. Bilateral maxillary and mandibular intermaxillary fixation screws noted. The patient is edentulous.

Case Discussion

TMJ arthroplasty is a procedure gaining mainstream acceptance as the treatment for end stage TMJ dysfunction that has failed medical management. Common indications include:

  • osteoathritis

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • post-traumatic condylar loss or injury

  • congenitial TMJ abnormalities

Specific complications include dislocation and malocclusion.
