Presentation
History of skiing accident two weeks ago. Heard a noise in the left calf region. Swelling has significantly improved since the accident.
Patient Data
Ultrasound demonstrates fluid deep to medial gastrocnemius and superficial to the soleus muscle, most prominent at the level of the myotendinous junction. Minor disruption in contour and echogenicity of muscle fibers.
Appearances are in keeping with minor partial tear to the left gastrocnemius at the myotendinous junction. Image of the normal right side was used for comparison.

Case Discussion
It is important to always compare sides when evaluating the extremities on ultrasound, particularly when the patient's symptoms have nearly resolved. The comparison clearly shows the differences between the sides.
