Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (knee)

Presentation

Complaining of swelling on anterior side of the left knee for the last few months. History of mild local pain.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Well-defined lesion in the region of the lump, measuring 19x16 x13 mm. The lesion is in the subcutaneous plane. It is separate from the joint and medial to the patellar tendon. The lesion is hypoechoic, mildly heterogeneous without calcification/cystic changes. There is a posterior acoustic enhancement. It shows mild compressibility. There are a few flow signals in the peripheral part of the lesion. The quadriceps and the patellar tendons are normal. There is no effusion in the suprapatellar region.

 

An intraoperative photo shows the subcutaneous location of the lesion.

Case Discussion

A young female presented with a lump on the anterior side of the knee for the last few weeks. Ultrasound shows a well-defined solid lesion in the subcutaneous plane. Surgical excision of the lesion was undertaken and histopathology of the lesion was a tenosynovial giant cell tumor.
