Thoracic aorta - normal (transthoracic echocardiography)

Case contributed by David Carroll
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

Asymptomatic male.

Patient Data

Age: 30
Gender: Male

Normal aortic root, mid-arch, and portions of descending aorta as visualized.

Case Discussion

Point of care ultrasound has demonstrated reasonable sensitivity for Stanford type A dissections in several 1 studies, but cannot reliably assess the arch/descending aorta. Use of unconventional windows and imaging planes may be necessary, and depth must be optimized for the best possible visualization.
