Case Discussion
There are three common types of thumb metacarpal fractures:
- Bennett fracture - intra-articular fracture of the base of the thumb metacarpal
- Rolando fracture - intra-articular comminuted fracture of the base of the thumb metacarpal
- Epibasal or pseudo-Bennet fracture- extra-articular fracture of the base of the thumb metacarpal
These types of fractures are also related to the Green and O'Brien classification system of thumb metacarpal fractures:
- type I: Bennett fracture
- type II: Rolando fracture
-
type III: epibasal fracture
- type IIIA: transverse
- type IIIB: oblique
- type IV: epiphyseal fracture
