Thumb pulp abscess

Diagnosis almost certain


Right thumb pulp region pain for 2-3 days. No trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

There is an anechoic/hypoechoic area (8 x 4 x 3 mm) with internal mobile echoes in the thumb pulp. There is no internal vascularity. However, perifocal hypervascularity is present. The adjacent cortex of the distal phalanx is normal. The distal end of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon is normal. There is no DIP joint effusion.      

Case Discussion

Ultrasound findings suggested an abscess in the thumb pulp. Surgery revealed pus.
