Thumbprinting in the colon

Case contributed by Calum Jones
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

bloody diarrhea, ?IBD - assess for dilated bowel loops/megacolon

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Distal transverse colon shows thumbprinting.

No dilated gas-filled large bowel loops to suggest toxic megacolon.

Case Discussion

This is an example of thumbprinting on abdominal x-ray -- where haustral folds become thickened/edematous, suggestive of an inflammatory process.

The patient went on to have a CT abdomen/pelvis which demonstrated non-specific colitis of the transverse and descending colon. No pneumoperitoneum.
