Tibialis anterior tendon rupture

Presentation

An opponent stepped on the patient's dorsiflexed foot in a soccer game. Weakened and painful dorsiflexion of the foot. Palpable mass at the anterior ankle joint.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

Complete rupture of the anterior tibialis tendon with retraction of the proximal tendon end.

Case Discussion

In complete ruptures, a mass may be seen or felt, which corresponds to the proximal tendon end, that is typically retracted to the level of the oblique superomedial limb of the inferior extensor retinaculum 1.
