Presentation
Cirrhosis of undetermined etiology.
Patient Data
Significant amount of diffuse ascites. In the pelvis the free fluid in the supravesical fossa anteriorly and in the Douglas pouch posteriorly results in a striking appearance of the uterus (showing involution) and bilateral ovarian ligaments suspending it.
Case Discussion
The above described appearance of the uterus and ovarian ligaments in the presence of large amounts of intraperitoneal free fluid has been informally termed the "TIE fighter sign" (from the Star Wars movie franchise) 1. While the academic value of the expression is doubtful at best, it is an instantly memorizable term which can be beneficial in the education of POCUS users or undergraduate students.
