MRI through the temporomandibular joints in closed and open mouth positions demonstrates an anteriorly subluxed disc when the mouth is closed with recapture on mouth opening.
The inferior insertion of the lateral pterygoid muscle, paralleling the disc and inserting into the neck of the condyle is nicely demonstrated particularly on closed mouth view.
