Main findings in this case are:
- torn anterior talofibular ligament
- OCD is seen in the medial talar dome
- bone marrow edema seen in the posterior malleolus
- fluid signals are seen within the sheaths of the tibialis posterior and peroneus brevis tendons (tenosynovitis)
- ankle joint effusion with significant surrounding soft tissue edema are noted
- susceptibility artifacts are seen at the skin over the lateral malleolus likely of the surgical stitches
Case Discussion
The anterior talofibular ligament is the weakest of the lateral collateral ligaments. It extends from anterolateral malleolar tip to talar neck.
Osteochondral lesions (OCL) are an umbrella term for focal injury of articular cartilage and underlying bone:
- osteochondral injury (or fracture): usually reserved for acute osteochondral lesion
- osteochondritis dissecans (OCD): chronic osteochondral lesion
