Presentation

Cough and dyspnea.

Patient Data

Age: 90 years
x-ray
  • the trachea is tortuous

  • artefactual mediastinal enlargement with probable true cardiomegaly (this is an erect anteroposterior chest view)

  • bilateral alveolar and reticular opacities

  • loss of volume of the left lung and blunting of the costophrenic angles

Case Discussion

Tortuous airways are anatomical variants seen generally in eldery patients with skeletal deformities (e.g. kyphoscoliosis)1. It should be recognized because it may be challenging to intubate these patients.
