Transient lumbar disc vacuum phenomenon

Presentation

Recurrent falls and result back pain, recently worse

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male

Gas is seen within the L2/3 disc. 

Two weeks later

This has resolved 2 weeks later but is now seen in the L5/S1 disc and especially T12/L1 where there is an associated worsening of the L1 compression fracture

Case Discussion

Intervertebral disc gas is common and usually benign, and in this case transient in a relativley short amount of time possibly related to trauma
