Presentation
Term neonate. Increased work of breathing. C-section delivery.
Patient Data
The tip of the orogastric tube projects over the stomach bubble.
The lungs appear congested, with mild airspace opacification in the perihilar lungs (left > right). Trace pleural fluid within the right horizontal fissure. The lung volumes are normal.
The cardiothymic contour is within normal limits.
Case Discussion
Transient tachypnea of the newborn is a common cause of neonatal respiratory distress, and is related to retention of amniotic fluid in the lungs post delivery. It most often occurs in neonates who are delivered by C-section.
The condition is typically self limiting, usually resolving within the first 48 hours of life.
