Presentation

Term baby. Spontaneous vaginal delivery. Oxygen requirement.

Patient Data

Age: 0 days
Gender: Male

Day 0

x-ray

NG tube tip over stomach.

Lungs are under-expanded with widespread, bilateral airspace opacification. Bilateral small pleural effusion (right>left).

Day 4

x-ray

Both pleural effusions have resolved. Improvement in aeration. Resolution of symptoms.

Case Discussion

Transient tachypnea of the newborn is classically associated with term babies born by cesarean section. However, it may occur following spontaneous vaginal delivery.

Imaging findings are those what would be associated with heart failure in other contexts. Interstitial fluid, airspace filling with fluid and pleural fluid.
