Presentation
Detected as an incidental finding.
Patient Data
The left-sided inferior vena cava is noted (normal variant). It ends at the left renal vein and crosses anteriorly to the right opposite L1 to join the normal prehepatic segment of the IVC.
Case Discussion
Transposition of inferior vena cava (also known as left-sided IVC) refers to a variant course of the inferior vena cava. It is considered the most common anomaly of the IVC. This diagnosis is important for preoperative planning of nephrectomy and renal transplantation, vascular procedures such as portosystemic shunts, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and the placement of an IVC filter.
