Transverse vaginal septum

Case contributed by Dr Utkarsh Kabra

Primary amenorrhea, cyclical abdominal pain

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female

The endometrial cavity is distended by hemorrhage. Transverse band in the upper vagina which is visualized more clearly after intravaginal administration of gel (right T2 sagittal stack).

Right hematosalpinx.

Case Discussion

Findings are consistent with a transverse vaginal septum, resulting in hematosalpinx (on the right, in this case) and hematometra. The MRI was specifically done to assess the thickness of the septum. For this, ultrasound jelly was introduced into the vagina to better delineate the septum.
