Traumatic rib fractures with lung contusion and pneumothorax

Presentation

Victim of road traffic accident. Conscious, however complains of severe chest pain and shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Posterior left 6th and 7th ribs fracture lines with minor displacement.

The left posterior basal segment shows peripheral patches of consolidation with mild ground glass opacity and septal thickening.

Evidence of left-sided rim of pleural effusion with pneumothorax.

Case Discussion

The patient exhibits signs of post-traumatic multiple rib fractures on the left side, along with underlying lung contusion and hemopneumothorax.

The recommended treatment includes immobilization, pain management for the rib fractures, and insertion of a chest tube.

Internal fixation may be considered for simple rib fractures that do not result in a flail chest.
