Triceps tendinopathy and olecranon bursitis

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Posterior elbow pain and swelling for two months.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

The triceps tendon insertion is thickened and hypoechoic with a few flecks of calcification. Color Doppler demonstrates neovascularity. The olecranon bursa is thickened and hyperemic.

No elbow joint effusion. Normal CEO, CFO and distal biceps tendon.

Case Discussion

Triceps tendinopathy is uncommon and, as in this case, can be associated with olecranon bursitis. Increasing age and female sex are both risk factors for tendinopathy.
