Triquetral and wrist fractures

Fall on out stretched hand. Painful wrist.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Small angular fragment on the dorsal aspect of the carpal bones.

Fractures of the radial and ulnar styloids.

The fracture on the dorsal aspect is indicated within the annotated circle.

Case Discussion

Distal radial and ulnar fractures daily occur in A & E departments.

Fractures of the carpal bones are less common with scaphoid fractures making up the majority, with triquetral fractures a distance second.

Triqueteral fractures are typically only identified on the lateral film.

Combined wrist and triquetral fractures are uncommon.
