Tuberous sclerosis

Case contributed by Dr Heba Mohamed

Under investigation for seizures.

Patient Data

Age: 7
Gender: Female

Multiple calcified nodules in the sub-ependymal regions as well as in the region of foramen of Monro.

Multiple low density subcortical areas consistent with cortical tubers.

Annotated image

Annotations of subcortical hypoattenuating regions consistent with possible cortical tubers.

Case Discussion

Axial CT images may point to tuberous sclerosis with calcified subependymal and foramen of Monro nodules as well as hypoattenuating cortical tubers.

The main differential diagnosis is congenital CMV infection, however the absence of brain atrophy as well as normal head circumference reduces that possibility.
