Tumoral calcinosis

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Bilateral elbow pain and swelling

Patient Data

Age: 12
Gender: Female

Initial radiographs of both elbows

Bilateral extensive soft tissue calcification posterior to the elbow joint around the insertion of triceps.  US confirmed that it was extra-articular.  Limitation of extension at the elbow.

Repeat radiographs 2 months later

Final follow up films

There has been significant reduction in the soft tissue calcification over the series of films.

Case Discussion

Initial radiographs demonstrate large volume bilateral soft tissue calcification.

A diagnosis of tumoral calcinosis was made and steroid therapy commenced.  Over the series of films over 6 months, there is marked reduction in the amount of soft tissue calcification, with a greater degree of improvement on the right.
