Small tubular device traversing the antero-inferior tympanic membrane (pars tensa) - note the middle ear cleft is well aerated.

Grommets are small tubes inserted via an incision in the pars tensa of the tympanic membrane into the middle ear cavity so that there is a communication between the middle and external ear for aeration.
