Umbilical cord cysts

Presentation

G4P3 at 28 weeks gestation

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

The ultrasound images demonstrate multiple eccentric cystic structures of various size within the umbilical cord along its course from the placental to its fetal insertion with no flow on color Doppler. The umbilical arteries and vein are well-visualized on color Doppler.

The BPD, and FL were at 28 weeks

Normal amount of amniotic fluid 

No other associated fetal anomalies were seen.

 

Case Discussion

Case of multiple umbilical cord cysts, most likely isolated.

The persistence of umbilical cysts in the 2nd or 3rd trimester, especially if associated with additional sonographic abnormalities, a karyotype should be performed to rule out aneuploidy such as trisomy 18, and trisomy 13.
