Presentation

Recurrent difficulty in breathing, failure to pass a nasogastric tube in the right nasal cavity.

Patient Data

Age: 1 month
Gender: Male
ct

Thin bony septum across the right choanal opening.

A small amount of retained secretions and mucosal thickening of the right compartment of the nasal cavity.

Normal left nasal canal.

 

Case Discussion

CT scan is the first radiological study for the assessment of choanal atresia as it can differentiate osseous from membranous type, it can also demonstrate the thickness of the atresia, visualizes the associated thickening of the vomer and narrowing of the posterior nasal cavity.
