Unilateral renal agenesis

Case contributed by Ammar Ashraf
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Term baby with history of solitary left kidney on antenatal scan.

Patient Data

Age: Newborn
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Left kidney measures 5.4 x 2.9 cm and shows homogeneous parenchymal echogenicity with smooth outlines. Right kidney is not visualized at its expected normal position in the right renal fossa as well as in the remaining abdominopelvic cavity.

Tc-99m DMSA

Nuclear medicine

Scan shows well-outlined left kidney with good cortical tracer uptake. No functioning renal tissue is noted in the right renal area or anywhere else in the abdomen to suggest ectopic kidney.

Case Discussion

Sonographic and DMSA scan findings are consistent with unilateral renal agenesis which is an isolated finding in this asymptomatic patient.
