Upper esophageal diverticulum

Case contributed by Bruno Di Muzio
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Chronic bad breath and dysphagia.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

Barium swallow

Fluoroscopy

There is a pouch arising from the midline of the posterior wall of the proximal esophagus, further below the pharyngoesophageal junction.

Case Discussion

This case illustrates a proximal esophageal diverticulum that has arises further below the level of the pharyngoesophageal junction and, therefore, is not a Zenker diverticulum. For having a posterior origin, it also appears to not fit as a Killian-Jamieson diverticulum, which arises below the cricopharyngeal muscle anteriorly and laterally.
