Ureteric calculus

A radiopaque 5 mm calculus projects immediately above the L4 transverse process on the right, in line with the presumed course of the ureter, and represents the known ureteric calculus seen on CT (not shown).
Case Discussion
Typical appearance of a ureteric calculus. Given the relatively small size, this stone would be expected to pass spontaneously.
This patient actually had a CT KUB prior to this x-ray. The reason for obtaining a plain film is that it allows you, if the calculus is radio-opaque, to follow the patient with low radiation plain films rather than CT scans.
