Urinary bladder carcinoma

Case contributed by Arthur Daire
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

History of hematuria and urinary frequency for 4 months. Lower abdominal fullness. On examination was found to have a lower abdominal mass. On ultrasound, a bladder mass and left side duplex system were suspected with hydronephrosis of both moieties.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years

Note: This case has been tagged as "legacy" as it no longer meets image preparation and/or other case publication guidelines.

ct

There is a large heterogenous mass in the right superolateral aspect of the bladder, causing obstruction of the right kidney. A right duplex system is evident, with hydronephrosis of both moieties.

A right ovarian cyst is also evident.

Case Discussion

A transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder was confirmed  after cystoscopy and biopsy. Infection by schistosomiasis (which is endemic in the area where the patient originated) is a known risk factor for bladder cancer. The right duplex collecting system was in incidental findings in this case.
