CT

Case Discussion

Two cylindrical batteries are seen in the urinary bladder. On asking the patient about these findings, the patient claimed that he inserted two batteries through the urethra for sexual excitement.

Ingested - or inserted, in our case - batteries can lead to several complications, such as organ perforation, fistula formation, stricture or intravasation secondary to fistulization to major blood vessels. Complications are more frequently reported with button or coin-type batteries.

The injury can occur due to:

  • ischemic necrosis caused by battery pressure
  • leakage of the battery contents

Continued injury can occur even after removal of the battery, due to electrical discharge and sodium hydroxide accumulation which is most concentrated at the anode (positive side).

Special thanks to my dear colleague Dr. Ramy El-Toukhy.
