Value of prone CT in renal colic evaluation

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Acute right loin pain and hematuria

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

CT KUB (prone)

Images inverted so look like supine but note position of the table on the anterior abdominal wall. Mild dilatation of right renal pelvis. Tiny stone in right ureteric orifice (arrow). The stone must still be in the ureteric orifice since if it was free in the lumen it would sink to the most dependent part of the bladder ie the anterior wall as the patient was scanned prone.
