Vanishing twin

Presentation

Asymptomatic patient, twin pregnancy follow-up

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Two intrauterine fetuses are noted. Fetus A (16 weeks 3 days of gestation) is morphologically normal. Fetus B is adjacent to the placental border in the second gestational sac and is dead. It is smaller (corresponding to 7 weeks of gestation) and does not show movement, cardiac activity or color Doppler signal. 

Case Discussion

In this twin pregnancy, one twin did not develop and died. 

This phenomenon is called the evanescent twin 1.
