Presentation

Thigh pain.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Linear hypoechoic areas are noted within vastus lateralis muscle with perifocal increased vascularity.

No mobile echoes noted.

US study 1 wk later

ultrasound

After one week of antibiotic treatment: persistent pain and increased swelling.

Elongated lobulated abscess in the vastus lateralis. It shows mobile echoes.

x-ray

linear lucencies are noted along the muscles of the thigh and increased girth over the lateral aspect of the thigh.

Case Discussion

Two ultrasound examinations one week apart show the development of an abscess in vastus lateralis muscle.
