Presentation

Injured fifth finger, unable to flex.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Dorsal dislocation of the 5th (little) finger proximal interphalangeal joint. Small bone fragment at the palmar aspect of the fifth metacarpal head.

The dislocation was reduced in the emergency department. No post-reduction x-rays were taken. The patient present 1 week later from their GP for an ultrasound with an inability to flex at the fifth finger proximal interphalangeal joint.

Bone fragment compatible with a volar plate avulsion fracture sits at the palmar aspect of the proximal interphalangeal joint. Normal alignment.
