Presentation

Persistent cough. Had ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt 10 years ago.

A right-sided VP shunt tube is seen coursing from the base of the right neck through the right hemithorax into the left upper abdomen; an unusual course without abnormal kinking or discontinuity. The tubing is looped upon itself in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen.

Mild diffuse bilateral bronchial wall thickening may be due to reactive airway disease.

No discrete focal consolidation, effusion or pneumothorax. Minimal left lung base fibrosis/atelectasis.

Case Discussion

A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is used to drain excess cerebral spinal fluid and in treatment for hydrocephalus 1. This patient has an unusual course from the neck into the left upper quadrant.
