VP shunt disconnection

Presentation

Altered mental status and vomiting in a patient with history of hydrocephalus and VP shunt in place.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
X-ray

Shunt series AP skull, AP cervical spine, AP chest and AP abdomen

There is no connection between the ventricular shunt in the head and the shunt tubing in the lower neck. The rest of the shunt tubing in the chest and abdomen is intact.

Case Discussion

The shunt series in this patient demonstrate a VP shunt disconnection at the level of the lower neck, best appreciated on the AP cervical spine view.
