Waist of scaphoid fracture

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Fall on out stretched hand whilst playing basketball. Pain in hand. Fracture?

Patient Data

Age: 17
Gender: Male

Undisplaced fracture through the waist of the scaphoid.

Case Discussion

The waist of the scaphoid is prone to fracture typically from a fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH).

It is the commonest carpal bone fracture by far representing three quarters of all carpal bone fractures..  Of these, three quarters occur through the waist.

These fractures require close attend as AVN of the distal pole may occur.
