Presentation

History of stroke.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
mri

Axial FLAIR images, in a patient with chronic Wallerian degeneration after a left MCA territory infarction, show atrophy of the left cerebral peduncle and subtle hyperintesity of the corticoespinal tract.

Case Discussion

Cerebral infarction is the most common cause of Wallerian degeneration, however,  it can result from any source of damage to axons or cell bodies, including neoplasm, multiple sclerosis or hemorrhage.
