Presentation
Rose thorn injury while gardening about a month earlier. Localized swelling and pain along the dorsal aspect of the PIP joint of the left index finger which has developed gradually. Foreign body? Abscess?
Patient Data
On the x-rays, no bony abnormality or radioopaque foreign body can be discerned.
On the dorsal aspect of the index finger a 8 x 5 x 2 mm hypoechogenic, superficial soft tissue infiltrate is visible likely representing a non-circumscribed inflammatory response. Within this region, an about 1 mm triangular reflective structure can be discerned which can represent a foreign body.
Case Discussion
The foreign body was surgically removed, during which it was found to be surrounded by soft tissue granuloma.
