Why is frequency-selective fat suppression not a good option on low field strength MRI magnets?
Higher MRI field strengths allows more discrete separation of lipid and water proton frequencies. When using lower field strengths, decreased separation of the lipid and water peaks may result in unreliable fat saturation. (Ref. 1)
What is a way around using frequency-selective fat saturation on a lower-strength MRI magnet?
Use a STIR sequence instead... it doesn't rely on frequency-selective fat saturation.
