Hiatus hernia

Discussion:

A hiatus hernia occurs where there is herniation of stomach through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. It is sometimes wrongly considered synonymous with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) despite poor correlation between the two.

Differential diagnosis:

  1. cavitary lung lesions
  2. loculated empyema
  3. hydropneumothorax
  4. esophageal obstruction
  5. mediastinal abscess
  6. hydropneumopericardium
  7. chest wall abscess
