On digital images, what is the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom? If you look at a mammogram digital image, is it necessary to bring back the patient for mag views when you can just use the little magnifying glass?

The little magnifying glass is actually a trap in breast imaging. Digital zoom with the little magnifier also zooms noise, mottle and all the other stuff you do not want; it does not actually give you added information. Optical zoom with air gap gives you added information and better definition (see case 21306). It adds pertinent information. There is no free meal in physics; what you win on the roundabout you lose on the swings.
