What is the best way to image the pancreas with ultrasound?

Imaging the pancreas can be difficult with ultrasound since gas in the overlying stomach or duodenum can keep the sound beam from penetrating far enough to get a clear image. Strategies to see the pancreas include using the left hepatic lobe as an acoustic window, imaging an NPO patient (not usually possible), or pressing on the abdomen firmly to push away overlying air (not always comfortable). Often, even with a valiant effort, the pancreas can only be partially seen.
