Salpingitis isthmica nodosa is thought to be an inflammatory condition, but the exact cause is unknown. It is a known cause of infertility. This pathology affects the isthmus of one or both fallopian tubes.

It is a risk factor for ectopic pregnancy and is associated with pelvic inflammatory disease. This condition is usually diagnosed by an hysterosalpingography, during an assessment of infertility.
