Case of hepatic hydatid cyst

  • based on morphology this would be classified as type IIb (see article on hydatid disease)
  • infection occurs by ingesting food contaminated with Echinococcus eggs
  • liver is the most commonly affected organ; lung is the second most common organ affected
  • in this case the cyst was surgically resected and patient recovered well post operatively with resolution of jaundice
