MRI of the knee demonstrates characteristic appearance of recent transient dislocation of the patella. There is bone marrow oedema involving the medial side of the patella and lateral side of the femoral condyles with thickening and high signal seen in the medial retinaculum. In addition there is also a grade 1 strain of the medial collateral ligament and a large joint effusion.
